Adventures in sub-par workmanship

Today, I finished up my latest Quilts for Kids project, made with the fabric the charity sent me to work with. I really love the colors in this one, it’s very bright and happy– probably a little more over-the-top than I would have chosen for a project, but I’m sure it’ll liven up a hospital room!
The frustrating thing, though, is that the quilting on this one did not go well. The back tension ended up being loose, and I didn’t notice until I had the entire quilt quilted, so it’s full of loose loops that I’m afraid will tear apart. On top of that, there’s a decent-sized fold in the backing… oops.
I’ll chalk this one up to being a rush job, and rest assured that some sick child isn’t going to care about a few loose stitches here and there, and instead enjoy having something bright to hug in the hospital. :)

Hawaiian Shirt

I’ve got one quilt for Quilts for Kids from one of their kits almost finished, but I want to send along a second one made from my own fabric as well. I found some funky Hawaiian-shirt-type fabric at Jo-Ann on Sunday, and decided to make up a simple crib quilt featuring it. I finished this top in about four hours, and it only took that long because I made the alternate blocks with cut triangles instead of a double-half-square-triangle method.
I love the color in this one, it’s very bright and cheerful. After the fact, I think I should have gone with a bright green instead of the pink, but I still like the combination and think it’ll bring a smile to a child stuck in a hospital.

Friday is my husband’s “guys’ night out,” so I spent a cozy evening at home by myself, holed up in front of the sewing machine. I decided to use some fun focus fabric I picked up to make another Quilts for Kids project using the same pattern as the kit I recieved.

I really like the bright colors in this one, and hopefully a child out there will feel the same way!

Quilts for kids kit

My Quilts for Kids kit finally showed up by UPS today. Talk about timing, I was just starting to dig through my stack of quilting books to look for a new project to start! The fabrics are great (I was really hoping for something with dogs or cats!) and about two hours later, I had the top, which I’ve dubbed “Puppy Parade,” completed:

I’m one for bright colors when I quilt, but this is even brighter than I expected! It’ll definitely bring a smile to some little kid’s face, I’m sure.

I got it all sandwiched with fusible batting, and I’m doing a quick free-motion meander on it right now (after a brief and failed attempt to stitch-in-the-ditch). With any luck I’ll have it finished up in the next day or so, and then I can send my package of two or three quilts off to the charity! :)
